A peer review system of articles prior to approval for publishing in an academic journal is the most accepted practice all over the world. This system originated in 1731, 289 years ago. The two major objectives of this system are to ensure that articles to be published are of high quality and to develop and upgrade the quality of knowledge in each field to the highest acceptable standard. The method of the system is to have a certain number of peers who are accepted to be the most qualified persons in the fields to review and evaluate those articles submitted for consideration to be published in such journal. Although there are several strengths and benefits derived from peer review system, certain weaknesses are proposed, such as a lack of qualified reviewers and poor quality of reviewers. Thailand has adopted this system to apply to academic publishing and conference papers for a certain period of time and similar problems have been found. This article aims to study the peer review system and the process being applied for acceptance in academic journals in Thailand. The essence of the paper comprises: the concepts of peer review system; the major component of the peer review system; types of peer review; the process of peer review; challenges to the peer review system and corrective strategies; conclusions and recommendations.
